Our yearly New Years trip to Port Aransas, Texas is off because of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, so we picked another destination, our "Happy Place"! We learned that the best planning won't stop the weather, so we lost our first day (and 2nd day activities) because of bad weather on our departure day. We tried to make lemonade and pretend like we were on vacation in Houston. Walked in Buffalo Bayou Park, and a nice lunch, and did some after-Christmas shopping.
This trip got delayed due to weather in Houston. THEN, American Airlines wanted to move our flight from day 2 in the morning to day 3 at night! Yikes! We paid extra to fly out on day 2 with Southwest Airlines. 4 days in Carmel is lot better than 2 days. We did lots of walking on the beach, met a Facebook friend for lunch at Spanish Bay, and did our hike in Garland Park (about ten miles out Carmel Valley Rd.) This trip included a Sunday, so we had a nice visit at Church of the Wayfarer - they LIKE tourists! Oh, one big plus... Our "Facebook fiend" is a member at the Beach and Tennis Club, and she gave us guest passes. What a treat! AND, we met a new artist on the Beach, Barry Marshall. 831-277-5445 Look for his painting in the photo section.
We found a new place, Affina restaurant, on San Carlos & 6th. 831-250-7744 www.affinacarmel.com The chef buys local ingredients every day, and they have live music as well. We did cook twice in our room at Fireplace Inn (Look for the Dolores suites). If you plan to cook there are two markets in Carmel, Brunos and Nielsons; both are within walking distance if you're staying in town. And, there is a chocolate shop in an historic building down Ocean Ave on the left side. Yum, yum.
Well, we certainly won't try to fly using miles again! It was clear that American just moved our "non-revenue" tickets along so we would fly on their schedule and not our schedule. Southwest Airlines is looking better and better. AND there are non-stop Southwest flights in and out of San Jose. We did like having the option to cook some of our own meals, so we'll pick a room with kitchen again. There are several options on our download "Carmel highlights" page.
We put captions with all the photos and are trying to improve our video productions skills. Hope you enjoy!
We started building this list in 1997! Here's the update.

We are going to group our videos in different categories to try to tell a story. This first group includes a new restaurant for us (Affina), our morning the Church of the Wayfarer, and a couple of unique stories that help make Carmel, well, unique!

They spent $600,000 on these two bathrooms.
Since there is no mail delivery in Carmel, everyone picks up their mail here... which means about 5,000 post office boxes!
This park is located about ten miles out Carmel Valley Road. It is free, but pretty vigorous hiking. We have also heard you should get there using Lyft or Uber for car security while you are gone for one or two hours on your hike.
This pond is about 45 to 60 minutes into the hike. It's peaceful. We didn't see many people on the trail.
You can hike higher than this vista, but we found the view to be invigorating and the exercise to be "enough", especially coming from a coastal area in Texas.
If you've been to Carmel, you'll know there is a LOT to the mile long Carmel beach. And there are more vistas as you walk south towards the Tor House and Carmel River beach
This video is at the north end of Carmel Beach, right under the 10th green at Pebble Beach golf course. If you're brave, you can walk up the embankment and see the golfers.
We walked from North Carmel Beach back to about the middle "just to catch the view."
Now we are back on Scenic Road and a little further south, getting closer to the Frank Lloyd Wright house.
These two buildings were hand constructed by Poet Robinson Jeffers in the early 1900s. At that time, they were the ONLY buildings in the area! If you haven't done this tour, please put it on your list!
This video starts looking north back in the direction of Pebble and Carmel Beach. The Carmel River Beach is nice, especially when Carmel Beach is crowded. If you go to Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch property, you'll this area from a different angle.
One day we decided to eat breakfast first and then go to Carmel Beach. Boy did the time change affect the angle of the sun light! (Maybe brought more people, too!)
This video starts with a view of the Frank Lloyd Wright house. We got to go inside once during the Carmel Home Tour. We noted during this walk that the tide was as high as we had ever seen. There is usually a LOT wider area of sand when we walk on Carmel Beach.
